One of the biggest reasons we get fat is because we eat too many carbohydrates that spike our insulin levels.  And there are plenty of vegetarian foods out there such as Lucky Charms and potato chips that will make you fat and keep you from losing weight.

The same rules still apply even if you’re on a vegetarian diet and you could easily gain MORE weight than eating a traditional diet with meat.  The reason is because there are still unhealthy fat-gaining foods that are considered vegetarian such as processed carbohydrates and drinks that are packed with calories.

For the most part I consume a balanced diet of vegetables and meats and I honestly would’t consider going vegetarian because I think there are more health benefits to eating meats.  But I still respect peoples decision to go with vegetarian diet but I always warn them that it doesn’t automatically guarantee weight loss.

Getting enough protein in your diet is one of the biggest struggles for a vegetarian but it is going to be super important if you’re looking to lose belly fat.  Also I’m definitely NOT recommended a no-carb diet but instead of getting my carbs from pasta, blueberry muffins, fruit loops, bagels, Clif bars, etc. I get them from vegetables, fruits, nuts and beans.

The same rules of not eating processed carbs also applies strictly to vegetarians.  It’s going to be super important to keep your blood sugar and insulin levels stable so it’s going to be critical to stay away from foods such as processed carbs and liquid calories to keep the fat off.

The reason I’m against drinking calories such as fruit juices and smoothies is because they’re packed with sugars and it doesn’t really matter that they’re natural sugars as well.  They’ll still spike your blood sugar and insulin levels and cause you to pack on fat.

I’m not saying completely cut out fruit but definitely make sure you’re eating WAY more raw vegetables than you are fruits.  This also goes for other alcohol drinks and beer if one of the worst things to drink along with champagne and riesling wines because of their high residual sugar content.

Once again the same rules apply when it comes to weight loss and it doesn’t matter if you’re a meat-eating carnivore or a hardcore vegetarian.  If you eat the bad stuff and not enough of the good stuff you’re going to pack on the fat.

If you’re a vegetarian and you’re having trouble getting enough protein then try finding a protein powder that’s completely vegan.  It’ll fit within your rules and it’ll fit within the rules of fat loss.
